How good are the Packers this year? They turn in what is clearly their poorest offensive performance...and score 35 points.
That performance included several "off" throws from Aaron Rodgers, who had what can only be descried as a, for him, sub-par game. And yes, that sub-par game is still light years better than most NFL quarterbacks' games.
The Bucs had a fantastic gameplan on offense and executed better than they have all year. The late crossing patterns are exactly what the Scott Linehan, the Lions' offensive coordinator, has used so effectively against Capers' defense.
Charlie Peprah was a big-time liability in coverage today.
Jordy Nelson could be mistaken for the number one wide receiver on the Packers.
Both the Greg Jennings and James Starks injuries could factor in down the stretch here. Hope all is ok.
Jermichael Finley reportedly wants to be the highest paid tight end in the league. Can't drop so many catchable balls if he wants to achieve that goal.
That said, Finley's presence factors in on so many plays that don't show up on the stat sheet.
Outside of Nelson, good to see Donald Driver have an impact for the second week in a row. Some quality snaps from the old man today.
How about friend of Cheesehead TV Tom Crabtree getting his first regular season touchdown?
Now we know why McCarthy wanted to reduce Raji's snaps on defense. He wants to save them for the offensive side of the ball.
Some really suspect tackling from the defense today. Just way too much "throwing a shoulder at the ball carrier" and not nearly enough wrapping up.
Josh Sitton is not playing nearly as well as he did in 2010.
Some nice push up the middle by Mike Neal in his limited action today.
Sam Shields with a bit of an up and down day. He got beat to the outside a few times, then got caught giving up inside leverage on the slant for a TD.
That Tim Masthay double-fumble for a first down was hilarious.
Speaking of the near-blocked punt: John Kuhn missed the same block he missed in 2009 when the Bucs actually got the block.
Short turnaround for the Thanksgiving showdown with the Lions. The last time the Packers were 10-0? 1962, when they won the championship and only lost one game all year...to Detroit...in Detroit...on Thanksgiving.

Injuries: Starks Lost But Neal Returns

Fellow running back Ryan Grant thinks James Starks will be fine after sustaining a knee sprain during the fourth quarter. Defensive end Mike Neal, meanwhile, saw his first action is more than 13 months.

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks suffered a knee sprain during the fourth quarter, and coach Mike McCarthy won’t know the extent of the injury until Monday.
Fellow back Ryan Grant, however, was upbeat that the injury isn’t something that will keep the Packers’ top runner out for too long.

“Initially, he was in pain, but I think (from) the initial shock,” Grant said. “What he was told by the doctor put him in good spirits. He said it’s a little sore right now. I guess (Monday) they’ll do the testing, but he was in good spirits.”

Starks finished with 38 yards on 11 attempts, with a 20-yarder bolstering a dismal day for the Packers’ ground attack. He added 53 yards on six receptions – both career highs. Of his 91 total yards, 55 of them came on the fourth-quarter touchdown drive after the Buccaneers had pulled within 28-26.

Starks was injured on the next series, when he was stopped for no gain on the play preceding Aaron Rodgers’ clinching touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson. Rodgers quickly signaled for the trainers to come out, and even McCarthy came on the field to check the condition of his young runner.

“I thought James was having a nice day with his opportunities,” McCarthy said. “I would have like to have given him some more opportunities. We had some things in, run and pass at the line, and they were challenging the box and played us very aggressively on the perimeter. There were some opportunities that he would normally have that he did not have. James is having a good year and I thought he was playing well up to the injury.”

If Starks can’t play against Detroit on Thursday – and that’s a good early guess given the short turnaround to the Thanksgiving game – they’d not only be without their top runner but their third-down back and No. 4 receiver. Starks has rushed for 541 yards and averages 4.5 per carry. Plus, he’s caught 28 passes for 210 yards. He’s on pace for 1,202 total yards. Grant, meantime, has rushed for 267 yards on 73 carries (3.7 average) and never has been an impact player as an outlet receiver.

Starks might play on Thursday

Running back James Starks not only appears to have avoided a serious knee injury, but he might play on Thursday in Detroit.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Starks, who is listed on this week’s injury report with knee and ankle injuries, is “sore” but could be back on the practice field as soon as Tuesday.

“We’ll see what he can do tomorrow at practice,” McCarthy said. “It feels like a normal day after a game. He tested out well and he has a chance to possibly do something on the field. That’s our plan with him.”

Starks went down awkwardly in a pile after getting stopped for no gain with just over three minutes left in Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. He had to be helped off the field. On the next snap, quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson with a 40-yard touchdown pass that sealed the 35-26 win.

“It’s better than what it looked,” McCarthy said, referring to Starks’ injury. “If you watch the tape, obviously the TV copy didn’t look very good.”

McCarthy did like the way Starks looked in the game. He rushed for 38 yards on 11 carries and added 53 yards receiving on six catches, both career bests in the receiving category.

On the Packers’ first touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, Starks accounted for a combined 55 yards from scrimmage, touching the ball on six of eight plays – four receptions and two rushes.

“I thought he was good with the ball in his hands … not only running the ball but the checkdowns, which to me is an extension of the run game,” McCarthy said. “He’s making people miss. He’s stepping out of arm tackles.

“We didn’t have 100 percent clean looks yesterday running the football, but I think James is getting better and stronger each week, and hopefully he can play this week.”

Two other additions to the injury report did not seem to have McCarthy concerned. Receiver Greg Jennings and left tackle Marshall Newhouseare both listed with knee injuries, but McCarthy said he expects both to play.

The Packers will return to the practice field for non-padded workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday to get ready for the Lions in this abbreviated workweek. Monday was not the usual day-after film review day but was more focused on game-plan meetings for Detroit.

McCarthy said the position coaches will review the Tampa Bay film with players individually, but it won’t be glossed over, particularly after the defense gave up 455 yards.

“We don’t react any differently to the way we grade the tape based on the outcome of the game,” McCarthy said. “We have to do some things better. There is a tendency of too many yards on defense, yes. We’re addressing it, and we’re working on it.”

More time will be spent in meeting rooms and walk-throughs than at practice to ease the physical toll on the players. McCarthy, who is preparing the Packers for a Thanksgiving game for the third time in the last five seasons, called it a “mental week” as the team wraps up the vaunted three-games-in-11-days stretch.

“I’m not going to lose the game on Tuesday and Wednesday because we practiced too much,” he said.

“We’ve got one game. The last two are in the past. We knew the Tampa game was going to be a little bit of a hump game, and it was.”
