A day after signing linebacker Bruce Carter, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued to add to their defense.

The team agreed to contract terms with defensive tackle Henry Melton, who, like Carter, played for the Dallas Cowboys last season, and former Chicago Bears safety Chris Conte on Thursday morning.

Sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen the Bears fully expect Jay Cutler to be their quarterback in 2015.

 :worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

Still, according to Mortensen, new offensive coordinator Adam Gase has been “enthusiastically making plans with a playbook they believe will accentuate Cutler’s strengths.”

In all, Cutler threw for 3,812 yards, 28 touchdowns and 18 interceptions for the 5-11 Bears in 2014.

The Chicago Bears have informed free agent middle linebacker D.J. Williams of the team’s intention to move in a different direction, and that Williams will not be offered a contract to return, according to source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Several teams have expressed interest in the 32-year old linebacker in advance of Tuesday’s official opening of free agency.

Williams started 10 games and recorded 73 tackles last year for the Bears before landing on injured reserve on Dec. 11 because of a nagging neck ailment.

The Chicago Bears have landed coveted free agent Pernell McPhee, agreeing with the versatile linebacker on a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million, according to multiple reports.

McPhee, 26, was underrated last season for the Baltimore Ravens, who had the NFL's No. 8 defense. He ranked third on the Ravens with a career-high 7.5 sacks despite playing 47.2 percent of the team's defensive snaps.

It appears the Bears plan to use free agency to address needs up front. The club is expected to make a push for Denver Broncos free-agent defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, with ESPN's Josina Anderson reporting that the Bears have "serious interest" in bringing in Knighton to anchor the interior of Vic Fangio's 3-4 front.

Veteran linebacker Lance Briggs won’t be returning to the Chicago Bears in 2015. Briggs  becomes an unrestricted free agent on Saturday and will be able to sign with a new team come next Tuesday. Ovoga mi nije žao. Potrošen je.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to trade wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Jets are sending a fifth-round pick to the Bears in return, according to a source. Žao mi je što ide, ali izgleda njegova mentalna nestabilnost je presudila. :(

BTW:

Free agency set to officially begin at 4 p.m. ET March 10, Pace has less than a month to make a decision on whether or not the team wants to pursue any of the big names on the market.

If the Bears want to spend money, they appear to be in good standing in terms of the salary cap. According to Over the Cap, they currently have $114,759,062 committed toward the roster for next season. If the cap sits at $140 million in 2015, the Bears could have nearly $26.7 million available to spend in free agency.

Gdje si USA ili otadžbina?

Izabrali Fox-a. Pa da, najsigurnija karta čini se. Kažu da ga igrači cijene i vole. To bi mogli navijači Denvera bolje da znaju. Što nije bio slučaj sa prethodnikom, Trestman-om.

"The last time the Bears hired a coach with previous NFL head-coaching experience was ... George Halas, when he rehired himself in 1946." :smile3:

Elem,

The Bears have been impressed with a number of candidates they have interviewed, including Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

Bowles is considered a favorite for the Falcons, Quinn has turned in strong interviews with the Jets, 49ers, Falcons and Bears, and Gase is still alive with the 49ers and Bears, sources said.

What do you think about John Fox?

The Chicago Bears introduced Ryan Pace as their new general manager Friday morning at Halas Hall.

On what he’s looking for most in a head coach …

“It doesn't matter if it's an offensive or defensive coach, if it's a 3-4 (defense) or 4-3. I'm looking for the best head coach that has the traits we're looking for. That's confidence, charisma, discipline, leadership, those types of things. The best man for the job.”

On what he looks for in a quarterback …

“The quarterback obviously is a critical, critical position to achieve sustained success. But it’s not the only position. For us to have a lot of success, all 53 guys are going to be accounted for. So yeah, I witnessed things with Drew Brees that I have in my mind, that I know why he was successful. And those are ingrained in me. But I want to get to know Jay (Cutler). I want to get to know him further before I come to these conclusions.”

The Chicago Bears announced the hiring of Ryan Pace on Thursday as general manager, marking the club's second move at the position in three years.

Pace, 37, joins the Bears after working 14 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, spending the past 13 years as a member of the player personnel department. Pace worked two seasons for the Saints as director of player of personnel, leading the club in all facets of scouting and the evaluation of college and pro prospects.

Throughout Pace's 13 seasons in the Saints' personnel department, the club posted a record of 115-93. The team advanced to the playoffs on five occasions since 2006, winning three division crowns in addition to playing in two NFC Championship Games (2006 and 2009) and winning the franchise's only Super Bowl title.
